Digitization of the analog planning tools of childrens cognitive development

CHALLENGE

Guldborgsund Kommunes teachers experienced a very time consuming way of working internally and across their municipality. On a daily basis, they evaluate all school children and starts planning on how to further improve their cognitive development. This was done by filling out a planning-scheme by pen and paper for each child. Just to name a few, the teachers were challenged when updating the paper sheets, informing other colleagues about updates and keeping track of their development.

DESIGN WORKSHOP

To kickoff the process, I planned and facilitated a 4-hour workshop with five teachers who all work with the planning scheme on different levels. Besides that, a digitization consultant participated to represent the business perspective and a tech lead represented the technical perspective. That way, we were able to incorporate different point of views and find a common ground to work from, so we ensured a desirable, feasible and viable product. 

 

Through the workshop we focused on the situation today, with a visual mapping on both the barriers and challenges as well as the possibilities in regards to the analog planning-scheme. Next up was a brainstorming session with the main goal of understanding the success criteria for and MVP and for the end-product. At last we spent time on being more practical and hands-on by sketching some of the ideas in order to make sure that we were all on the same page. Besides that, we ended up with hand-drawn wireframes for me to develop mockups from. That way, the workshop focused on locating the core challenges and how we could these by e.g. minimize time spent on filling out a scheme, minimize lost communication between colleagues or remove unnecessary fields when not relevant. 

SOLUTION

With all the insights gathered from the workshop I initiated the ideation process with focus on wireframes. When functionalities in place, I turned the wireframes into mockups. By using their design guideline, the User Interface was fairly quick to implement on top of the wireframes.
